The need for independents in Parliament July 30, 2007

The farce that is the Dr Haneef terrorism case shows just why you should vote independent at the 2007 federal election. The Howard coalition government is playing politics with a man’s life — a man who is looking increasingly innocent. And where is the Labor opposition when its voice is most needed? Locked in step behind John Howard.
Like never before there is a need for independent and honorable voices in the Australian parliament and that is why you should vote ‘1′ for Lachlan Connor in the Senate later this year.

Last Friday I was interviewed by Dan Hamilton of The Wire who is compiling a series of reports on independent candidates at this year’s federal election. He tells me that the interview will air this Thursday and that it will also be available online. I’ll provide a link here when it is posted on the website.

Greetings Victorians and supporters,
You may have noticed that I’m not the best at keeping this blog updated with words so I’ve decided (in response to John Howard’s YouTube policy announcement) to supplement the GrodsCorp campaign with my own personal video broadcasts. Feel free to leave questions in the comments that you’d like me to address in future broadcasts.
Cheers,
Lachlan Connor

Dear readers and supporters,
I’d just like to yet again thank everybody for their support so far in my campaign to represent Victoria in federal Parliamen, and apologise for letting you all down by hitting a bit of a low point these past few months. I have to admit that I largely lost my motivation recently and seriously considered throwing the whole campaign in. However, I have realised that I have a responsibility to Australians to restore democracy to our Parliament and have decided to restart my campaign with vigour.
Look out for me on the streets of Melbourne and regional Victoria in the coming months as I set out to convince Victorians to vote “1″ Lachlan Connor at the 2007 federal election.
I look forward to answering your questions on this blog as they come in.
Your humble servant in democracy,
Lachlan Connor.
ps/- The good folk at GrodsCorp tell me that new episodes of the documentary following my campaign will be broadcast from tomorrow.
Website update March 12, 2007

Hi all. Sorry I’ve been really quiet lately but I’ve been doing extra shifts at the traffic surveying job to try and put some decent cash together for the Senate tilt. Starting this campaign has made me realise just how complicated and expensive it is.
Just a quick note today to inform everyone that I’ve had Gavin (my webmaster) update my website with my first two policies. You can check them out in the policy section of my website: lachlanconnor.com.
The documentary crew that has been following my campaign are taking a production break at the moment but tell me they plan to return shortly. The documentary director told me over a couple of beers that a bit more policy development would be nice for the doco so I’m currently working very hard on exactly that. More detail soon!

G’day February 10, 2007

I hope that everyone has had a pleasant start to 2007. I’m sorry I’ve been a little quiet but I’ve been doing a lot of shifts at the traffic surveying job and working hard to formulate some policy and my campaign strategy.
Just a couple of questions from my public this time around. Greeny asks, “who’s bankrolling your campaign? It looks expensive.”
Well, Greeny. I’m financing my campaign at the moment with a little monetary assistance now and again from my flatmate Heather. Jacob keeps on offering to put some cash in the pool whenever he’s had a few drinks but seems to conveniently forget when it’s time to pay up. The campaign may look expensive but, let me tell you, it’s a real shoestring type operation around here. Thankfully the documentary component of my campaign is funded by those good people over at GrodsCorp.
CarrieO has sent me commiserations about the “girlfriend incident” at my launch party and has very kindly mentioned that she finds me very attractive. She asks, “would you mind if I stalked you? Actually I’m doing it right now. I am not psychotic, promise.”
Well, CarrieO, I’d prefer that you didn’t stalk me. I mean, I’m sure you’re very nice and all but internet romances never really work, do they? Anyway, I know you’re joking about the stalking thing.
Aren’t you?
First 2007 update January 11, 2007

Hi, everyone. Time for a bit of an update on my campaign for election to the Senate in the 2007 election. Christmas and new year have come and gone and so has the launch party for my election campaign. The launch didn’t go quite to plan and the first of three documentary episodes charting the party’s progress has been broadcast.
On the policy front there I have done a lot of foundational work putting down a solid ideological base from which to build sensible and progressive policy. Keep your eyes on this blog, the documentary, and on my policy page for policy detail as it is released.
In my last post Christine asked, “What is your position on the increasing commercialisation of the birth of Santa Claus?”
Well, Christine, my first point is that Santa Claus is immortal and, thus, was never born — he has always existed. I think you may be referring to Jesus Christ who some believe was born on December 25. However, many scholars have determined that Jesus was actually born in September or August and so the increasing commercialisation of December 25 is actually a commercialisation of the summer solstice. As I am not a Wiccan I do not have a view on this.
On the GrodsCorp site Chewbucka asked, “I heard yesterday that the new Greens member in the Vic Parliament, Greg Barber, paid tribute to Federal Greens member, Bob Brown, who he described as ‘the voice of Obi-Wan Kenobi in my head’. I would like to know whose voices you hear inside your head Lachlan? Bob the Builder ‘we can do it’? and what about Jacob? Grease II ‘I am a cool rider’?”
Thanks for your question, Chewbucka. When it comes to politics I hear the voice of Mark Latham in my head. He might have been a nutcase but the government of Australia sure is a “conga line of suckholes” today. I also have the same philosophy about politics that Lath-Daddy had: to blur the line between “insiders” and “outsiders”. Of course, I also have the voice of Nelson Mandella in my head. What an inspiring man.
I hope 2007 is a great year for all of my readers. Keep those questions coming in.
Lachlan Connor.
